New range Smart IP cameras from Hikvision
Hikvision's Smart IP camera range has been boosted by the addition of four 6mega pixel ultra HD cameras that provide a total resolution of 3072 x 2048 at full frame rate. Like the DS-2CD4065F-(A) SMART IP box camera launched last year, all four of the new models are said to feature high specifications and are powered by Hikvision's Smart technology. Introducing the UK’s first solar powered access barriers
Kent based company, Green Gate Access Systems, has launched a solar-powered car park barrier systems. The kits, manufactured by Italian company O&O, are said to be capable of functioning in the UK weather conditions all year round. The barriers are suitable for operation from solar-power where a green solution is required or a mains supply is not readily available, allowing security to be fitted to the most remote locations. In standard format the solar panel will operate the barrier up to 100 times a day

Power management company Eaton has launched the Streetworks Verdeon light-emitting diode (LED) energy-efficient roadway luminaire to its street lighting line. Said to provide high performance, long life, low maintenance and low cost, the luminaire provides energy savings up to 50% when compared to standard high-intensity discharge (HID) solutions.

New ultra-compact box PC from Arbor
Arbor Technology has added to its range of extended-temperature box PCs with the launch of the ARES-5300 programmable embedded controller which features a fanless, cable free, modular design and is built around the Intel Celeron J1900 quad-core SoC processor. According to the company the ARES-5300 is suited for use in harsh environments with excellent shock and vibration protection and an operating temperature range of -30°C to 60°.

Siemens unveils new Heimdall detector
Siemens has extended its range of kerbside detection solutions with the introduction of a new Heimdall kerbside volumetric pedestrian detector. Based on advanced above-ground radar technology, the detector has the capability to indicate the occupancy of the pedestrian waiting area at any given time, allowing the most appropriate kerbside strategies to be selected depending on the numbers of pedestrians waiting to cross.

Pluto pictures highlight satellite potential
Along with many others on planet Earth, I have been captivated by the amazing images of Pluto’s surface captured by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft and sent back across some 4.3 billion kilometres (2.7bn miles) of space. The capture and transmission of such detailed images highlights the progress in the whole area of satellite technology and prompts the mind to contemplate the potential that the increasing number of earth-orbiting satellites could hold for the transport sector.

Worldwide free flow toll successes for Sanef ITS
2015 is proving to be a bumper year for Sanef ITS, as visitors to the company’s stand at the ITS World Congress will learn. At the beginning of the year, Sanef began operating the Dartford Crossing (pictured below) in Greater London as part of a seven-year contract that saw the company design, implement, deliver and now operate a new free-flow charging system. The company said that it is helping the British economy save €22 million in annual congestion costs on the UK’s busiest road.

New app aids travel behaviour research
Sense.DAT is a smart app that has been developed to fully support panel-based travel research. It can measure, analyse and store outdoor travel behaviour (travel diaries) and travel experience data. The sensors in a traveller’s iPhone detect where and when they travelled, by what mode and by which route. It offers a daily travel overview, including statistics that can be accessed through a calendar.

Marwis mobile weather sensor aids road weather forecasting
Appearing at the 2015 ITS World Congress will be another high point in 2015 for German measurement technology specialist G. Lufft. The company has developed Marwis, a mobile sensor detecting road weather data such as the surface temperature, water film height, ice percentages, or friction from a moving vehicle. As a result, the device generates measurement rates of up to 100 measurements per second and transfers the values via Bluetooth in real time.
