Turning off red light cameras costs lives, new research shows

Red light camera programs in 79 large US cities saved nearly 1,300 lives through 2014, researchers from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have found. Shutting down such programs has cost lives, with the rate of fatal red-light-running crashes shooting up 30 per cent in cities that have turned off cameras. New Rochelle, New York deploys red light enforcement

US-based provider of automated traffic enforcement solutions, Brekford, is to deploy a seventh red light enforcement system in New Rochelle, New York. The City has approval from the State of New York to install photo enforcement systems at 12 intersections, with approximately 40 approaches. According to American Traffic Solutions' (ATS) results from the latest review of its CrossingGuard School Bus Stop Arm Safety Camera Programs show the automated enforcement systems continue to deter drivers who might otherwise illegally pass a stopped school bus and put children in danger.
