Traffic safety company Sensys Gatso has delivered its first batch of in-vehicle enforcement systems to an unnamed governmental customer in Saudi Arabia. The contract has a potential value of €10m (£8.9m). The company says its T-Series in-vehicle systems can be deployed in large quantities without having to install fixed units on the roadsides. The initial deployment has triggered the second delivery of the five-batch order, Sensys Gatso adds.

The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has installed Edeva’s traffic system speed bumps on the E65 road in the city of Ystad. Called Actibump, the solution is intended to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the street from Ystad harbour. Actibump detects if the speed of an oncoming vehicle is above the limit and lowers a hatch a few centimetres into the road surface to remind the driver of the speed limit.

Seatbelts will become mandatory on all medium and large highway buses built from 1 September 2020 in Canada, following new safety rules established by Transport Canada. The government department develops transportation regulations, policies and services. Marc Garneau, minister of transport, says: “By having seatbelts on highway buses, we can help reduce injuries in severe collisions, such as rollovers, and improve safety for everyone.”

Mobike has partnered with police in Shanghai to implement electronic ‘fences’ that prevent cyclists from parking around People’s Square in Lujiazui and other prohibited areas. The London Borough of Wandsworth has chosen Videalert to install unattended CCTV enforcement cameras at what it calls ‘problem’ locations. The move is part of a shared parking drive to improve operational efficiency and achieve cost savings. Wandsworth’s parking team trialled Videalert’s Digital Video Platform which revealed high capture rates in busy traffic conditions through ONVIF-compliant cameras. In addition, the system also captured multiple contraventions from a single wide-area network unit.

The UK government has given the RAC Foundation £480,000 to lead a road casualty investigation with police forces. The trial’s dedicated teams will research selected cases to get a better understanding of the causes behind road accidents to help inform road safety policies. Under the agreement, the RAC Foundation will work with the Department for Transport (DfT), Highways England, Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency and the police.
