The ability to bundle together travel data from several discrete sources and fuse it to give a more comprehensive overview of events to stakeholders is the key aim of Viajeo, which is conducting trials in several cities around the world. Spanish specialist in wireless sensor networks Libelium has launched the Vehicle Traffic Monitoring Platform as part of its Smart Cities solution. The platform is capable of sensing the flow of Bluetooth devices in a given street, roadway or passageway while differentiating hands-free car kits from pedestrian phones. Sensor data is then transferred by a multi-hop ZigBee radio, via an Internet gateway, to a server. Traffic measurements can then be analysed to address congestion of either vehicle or pedestria

Beginning in June 2011, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) began replacing 14 deteriorated bridge superstructures on Interstate 93 throughout the city of Medford. The project has been called the 93 FAST 14, and because of its impact on the travelling public Mass DOT has implemented the use of Smart Work Zone technology.

Designed to save lives in work zones, the RoadQuake temporary portable rumble strip, from Plastic Safety Systems, is a transverse rumble strip. Drivers crossing over it feel a significant bump and vibration and hear an audible alert. As the company says, most drivers will react to warnings by driving more cautiously and with more awareness. RoadQuake can be installed in minutes without special equipment, adhesives or fasteners.

Eberle Design (EDI) has unveiled the CMU ADU (auxiliary display unit), a rack-mounted display module that provides an LED fourcolour by 32 channel full intersection display. This is combined with a SmartMonitor interface to a CMU-212 cabinet monitor unit (CMU). The company says it designed the new ADU because many transportation agencies no longer supply their personnel with laptops for connecting with instrumentation in on-street cabinets.

Traficon has announced the Viewcom/E Max+, a communication board for intersection control. Its task is to transmit traffic data and alarm events issued by VIP (video image processor) vehicle presence detectors. This new module provides H.264 compressed video, which guarantees best quality video while consuming minimal network bandwidth.
