Transport for London has announced plans to test new safety technology on London buses. Automatic braking and audible warning systems will be trialled alongside measures including new mirrors to improve the driver’s vision. All the new technology will receive a completely independent trial at the Transport Research Laboratory, whose engineers and technical specialists have been appointed to work with TfL, bus manufacturers and operators to trial a range of innovative safety measures.

Australia-based Aldridge Traffic Controllers (ATC) is to install its ATSC4 VC6 traffic signal controller in Dublin, Ireland, for the Luas Cross City Light Rail project. The new light rail system for Dublin City is the next phase of Dublin’s integrated light rail network and will pass through 25 SCATS-controlled junctions and 10 pedestrian crossings. It is the extension of the Luas Green line creating an interchange with the red line. There will be 13 new stops with 8 of these in the core city centre area.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has awarded Q-Free a two-year extension of its advanced traffic management system contract. The renewal, valued at around US£2 million, runs until September 2019 and includes system maintenance and new functionality.

An automated vehicle trial is underway on the Monash-CityLink-Tullamarine corridor to help Victoria, Australia, prepare for the future of driverless vehicles. Transport for London (TfL), London Councils and the Greater London Authority (GLA) have announced funding of almost US$6 million (£4.5 million) to London boroughs to install electric vehicle charging infrastructure on London’s streets. A total of 25 boroughs, each receiving up to US$394,000 (£300,000), will install up to 1,500 standard-speed on-street charging points in residential areas, as part of Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s long-term vision for zero-carbon transport in the Capital another step closer.
