Turkish company Vendeka is looking to expand its operations internationally after completing what it describes as the first passive RFID-based tolling project in Europe. The company installed the system on the Bosphorus Bridge, which links Europe and Asia. Previously, tolling was achieved by a card-based system, but traffic jams were caused by drivers stopping to place their cards in the readers. This has been replaced by Vendeka’s passive RFID system. Italy’s largest industrial company, oil and gas giant ENI, has asked all its third-party transport operators to use the new EGNOS system, which allows more accurate tracking of dangerous goods in transit. Satellite-based EGNOS improves the accuracy of existing GPS tracking systems, giving a vehicle’s position to an accuracy of one metre, compared to around four metres by GPS alone, said Telespazio’s Antonello Di Fazio at the World Congress yesterday. Panasonic is showcasing the evolution of vehicle On-Board Units (OBU) which combine electronic toll collection with provision of real-time travel information to drivers. The first generation of DSRC-based OBUs launched to market in Japan back in 2001, where around 40 million are now in use. Orange is showing off a Citroen C-Zero electric car that has completed the first round-the-world trip by a battery-powered car. The car took eight months, travelled 25,000km through 17 countries and consumed just €250 ($325) of electricity. Orange said the object was to show that a standard electric vehicle could cope with such a trip. Denso is showing what it says are the largest head-up display (HUD) images to be used in a vehicle environment. Its system – although in a slightly smaller format – has already been installed in Kia’s new K9 luxury car and Denso says it is in talks with US and European manufacturers over adopting the system. The image area produced by the HUD on Denso’s stand measures 230 x 90mm, with road information such as speed limits and directions being projected into the driver’s line of sight.
