In response to the announcement that average speed cameras are to be introduced on a stretch of the A9 in Scotland, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has said that any speed limit must be properly enforced. The decision to install the new average speed camera system which will run from Dunblane to Inverness follows an on-going review of evidence as well as careful consideration of the views of the A9 Safety Group – to which FTA has contributed on behalf of its members over the last year.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued an enforcement notice ordering Hertfordshire Constabulary to review its use of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. The decision follows the ICO’s investigation into extensive use of ANPR cameras surrounding the town of Royston. The scheme, regularly referred to as ‘the ring of steel’, has effectively made it impossible for anyone to drive their car in and out of the town without a record being kept of the journey.

Figures released by France’s National Council for Road Safety (CNSR) indicate that the number of people killed on French roads dropped by fifteen per cent in the first half of 2013 compared with the same period last year. Australia’s New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services has awarded Redflex Traffic Systems the contract to provide around forty Redflex Radarcam in-vehicle mobile speed for the State’s expanded mobile enforcement program. Redflex has been operating an interim program in New South Wales since 2010, involving the delivery of 930 enforcement hours per month. A study carried out by Baton Rouge, Louisiana’s Department of Public Works shows drops in both traffic crashes and violations at selected intersections in the five years since the city launched a traffic light camera program.
