In response to the announcement that average speed cameras are to be introduced on a stretch of the A9 in Scotland, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has said that any speed limit must be properly enforced. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued an enforcement notice ordering Hertfordshire Constabulary to review its use of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. The decision follows the ICO’s investigation into extensive use of ANPR cameras surrounding the town of Royston. The scheme, regularly referred to as ‘the ring of steel’, has effectively made it impossible for anyone to drive their car in and out of the town without a record being kept of the journey.

Figures released by France’s National Council for Road Safety (CNSR) indicate that the number of people killed on French roads dropped by fifteen per cent in the first half of 2013 compared with the same period last year.
