Flir traffic webinars in November
November 12, 2015
The Flir Traficon Academy has organised a series of free, one-hour informative webinars that will teach users more about keeping traffic flowing. 5 November: Vehicle and bicycle presence detector Flir ThermiCam/ TrafiSense is an integrated thermal camera and detector that can be used for vehicle and cycle detection. It does not need light to operate, but uses thermal energy emitted from vehicles and bicyclists. In this webinar, Flir shows how this works, how easy it is to install and to configure Reg
New report explores the future of mobility and technology in cities
November 11, 2015
A new report released today from the National League of Cities (NLC) explores trends in mobility and technology in cities and identifies what cities can do to move seamlessly and efficiently into the future of mobility. City of the Future: Technology and Mobility explores how transportation will change with coming technological disruptions, draws on knowledge from leading experts in the field and delves into city and regional transportation planning documents from the 50 most populous US cities, as well as
TRL develops eCall test proposals ahead of mandatory roll-out in 2018
November 11, 2015
TRL, the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory, has developed proposals for technical requirements and test procedures for the European type-approval of eCall in-vehicle systems. The draft proposals, which were developed for the European Commission, provide recommendations on the safety requirements for eCall systems in preparation of the mandatory European roll-out in 2018. Following the publication of eCall Regulation (EU) 2015/758 in May 2015, TRL was commissioned by the European Commission to develop dr
Euro NCAP puts autonomous pedestrian detection to the test
November 11, 2015
European safety organisation Euro NCAP is introducing a new test that will check how well vehicles autonomously detect and prevent collisions with pedestrians, which it says will make it simpler for consumers and manufacturers to find out which systems work best. According to Euro NCAP, independent analysis of real world crash data in the UK and Germany indicates that the deployment of effective autonomous emergency braking systems on passenger cars could prevent one in five fatal pedestrian collisions.
Benefits of traffic data sharing with app developers
November 10, 2015
Timothy Compston finds out if exchanging traffic and road condition data with private app developers makes sense for both drivers and road authorities. Much has been said about the potential benefits for authorities in sharing data with traffic and navigation app developers, and receiving ‘crowdsourced’ information in return – so how is it working in practice?
Volvo Cars developing kangaroo detection system
November 5, 2015
Volvo Cars is developing kangaroo detection technology to solve one of the most costly causes of traffic collisions in Australia. A team of Volvo Cars safety experts is in the Australian Capital Territory to film and study the roadside behaviour of kangaroos in their natural habitat. The data Volvo Cars collects will be used to develop the first ever kangaroo detection and collision avoidance system. According to the National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) there are over 20,000 kangaroo strikes on A

Florida DOT approves ISS radar sensor
November 3, 2015
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Traffic Engineering Research Laboratory (TERL) has approved Image Sensing Systems’ RTMS Sx-300 radar detector, which was evaluated against the extensive requirements of FDOT specification 660. The non-intrusive, radar-based RTMS Sx-300 is a small roadside pole-mounted radar sensor for the detection and measurement of traffic, operating in the microwave band. It simultaneously provides per-lane presence, volume, occupancy, speed and classification informati
Upcoming Flir traffic webinars
October 30, 2015
Flir Traficon Academy is organising several informative webinars for November, to provide participants with more about keeping traffic flowing. The vehicle and bicycle presence detector on 5 November at 7:00am, 1:30pm and 6:30pm will discuss the Flir ThermiCam/TrafiSense integrated thermal camera and detector that can be used for vehicle and bike detection, which uses thermal energy emitted from vehicles and bicyclists to detect their presence
Half of top OEMs work on LiDAR technology for ADAS
October 13, 2015
Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology, as part of an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) sensor suite, will be mostly deployed for active safety functions with only 29 per cent fitted for fully automated driving purposes by 2021, according to Frost & Sullivan. Out of the top 13 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), seven are working on automated driving passenger vehicles using a LiDAR. Frost & Sullivan’s latest analysis, LIDAR-based Strategies for Active Safety and Automated Driving from M
