March 22, 2016
The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) in the US has awarded International Road Dynamics (IRD) a US$2,623,703 contract to supply and install a two-sided mainline weigh-in-motion (WIM) and electronic pre-clearance system on Interstate 15 at the Inkom Port of Entry. The contract includes a two-year equipment, software, and database maintenance provision to commence upon completion of the system's installation. This system will weigh and measure commercial vehicles at highway speeds upstream of the weigh
Spanish company offers full range of mobility solutions
March 17, 2016
Spider OIM (optimising integral mobility) from Spanish company Ikusi is designed for the supervision and management of large volumes of data from multiple sources and systems in cities. Spider OIM centralises, processes and exploits data in a multi-modal manner to enable transport planners, operators and authorities to visualise it in a simplified and orderly way, to better understand the current mobility status. This is said to contribute to better decision making for reducing operational costs, coordina
Intersection monitoring from video using 3D reconstruction
March 9, 2016
Researchers Yuting Yang, Camillo Taylor and Daniel Lee have developed a system to turn surveillance cameras into traffic counters. Traffic information can be collected from existing inexpensive roadside cameras but extracting it often entails manual work or costly commercial software. Against this background the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) was looking for an efficient and user-friendly solution to extract traffic information from videos captured from road intersections.

Opticom emergency and transit solutions and Canoga traffic-sensing solutions are deployed at more than 70,000 intersections and 3,100 cities worldwide, including 41 of the 50 largest North American cities. GTT Mid-Atlantic will recei
UK cities trial pollution-measuring lasers
February 16, 2016
A new system that combines laser-based remote sensing and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is being trialled in London and Birmingham in a bid to catch polluting cars. Developed by Hager Environmental and Atmospheric Technologies (HEAT), the emissions detecting and reporting system (EDAR) remotely detects and measures infrared absorption of environmentally critical gases coming out of a moving vehicle. The technology is combined with still/scene camera technology and an ANPR camera, which al
Idaho developing wildlife-detection system to improve driver safety
February 15, 2016
Idaho Transportation Department’s (ITD) research program has initiated a project to evaluate an innovative new wildlife-detection system that may bring improved safety to area highways and reduce personal injury and property damage. The project is the result of a request from ITD’s northern Idaho office, and is a partnership between ITD and the Western Transportation Institute (WTI) of Montana State University. Collisions between wildlife and vehicles can be a big problem, and common in rural states such

Sensors reducing pedestrian-car collisions
January 22, 2016
The EU-funded ARTRAC project has developed new sensor technologies which it believes could help meet the European Commission’s target of halving road accidents by 2020. The project, which includes carmakers Volkswagen and Fiat, developed an affordable radar sensor that uses multiple antennas to detect, classify and avoid obstacles on the road before collision and reduce the likelihood of vehicles colliding with pedestrians.
