Birmingham steers towards car restrictions

The UK city of Birmingham is proposing to restrict private car access to its centre as part of a wide-ranging blueprint to improve the way people move around.

The Birmingham Transport Plan 2031 “describes what the city needs to do differently to meet the demands of the future” and offers ideas to “support the delivery of a high quality, sustainable public transport system fit for all users”.

Here Technologies joins 5GAA

Here Technologies has joined the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) with the aim of developing solutions for future mobility and transportation services.

Here says 5GAA supports the idea that 5G will be best able to carry out critical communications for safer driving, support enhanced Vehicle to Everything communications and connected mobility solutions.

CEO Edzard Overbeek says: “Here will contribute to the 5GAA’s mission by providing a rich location context, so these emerging technologies can orient themselves in and navigate through this new world.”

Signage firms Sunrise and SESA merge

Signage specialists Sunrise Systems Electronics Co and SES America (SESA) have merged to form Sunrise SESA Technologies.

Sunrise, which formed in the 1970s, manufactures LED display technology and custom signs for bus and rail, while SESA provides dynamic message signs and retrofit packages for ITS customers in the US and Canada.

TfL bans Uber from London following security breaches

Transport for London (TfL) has stripped Uber of its private hire operator's licence following security breaches which it says put passengers at risk.

Uber slammed the decision but TfL says that a change in the ride-hailing giant’s systems allowed unauthorised drivers to upload photos to other driver accounts.

This enabled the drivers to fake their identity and pick up passengers - in at least 14,000 trips.

Lyft pulls out of six US cities

Lyft is withdrawing its scooter operations from the US cities of Nashville, San Antonio, Atlanta, the Phoenix area, Dallas and Columbus.  

A company spokesperson told TechCrunch “We’re choosing to focus on the markets where we can have the biggest impact. We’re continuing to invest in growing our bike and scooter business but will shift resources away from smaller markets and toward bigger opportunities.”

MaaS Alliance joins Global New Mobility Coalition
MaaS Alliance has joined The Global New Mobility Coalition (GNMC), a community of more than 100 institutions which aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 95%.
