5G-Safe project developing road weather services based on vehicle data
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is coordinating the 5G-Safe project, which is part of Tekes’ Challenge Finland competition. It is focused on the identification of local weather and road conditions on the basis of data collected from vehicles, and the sending of warnings to road users. In addition, real-time video and radar data will be exchanged between passing vehicles. CBS Radio uses TrafficLand service to deliver real-time traffic video
US live video aggregator TrafficLand is to supply its video management technology (VMC) to CBS Radio, providing regional news operation centres and individual radio stations with 24-hour access and the ability to monitor rush hour patterns, traffic bottlenecks and how incidents affect traffic conditions. Survey finds van drivers optimistic about new technology
A new survey from UK insurance website Gocompare.com Van Insurance asked van drivers what they think of the new technology that might affect their business. Safety was a concern when it came to new technology. Over 50 per cent of respondents said they thought futuristic technology might provide a safety risk. This was of particular concern to drivers in both Belfast and Norwich – with 71 per cent of the respondents in those cities naming it as an issue for them. Iteris to carry out connected vehicle review study for OCTA
Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), California, has awarded Iteris a contract to conduct a Vehicle-to-Infrastructure State of the Practice Review. The study will cover connected vehicle technology between vehicles (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and will make recommendations for how the OCTA can advance their development and use as the technologies and their applications mature.

Bosch launches automated driving initiative in China
German automotive supplier Robert Bosch is to collaborate with Chinese internet group Baidu and map providers AutoNavi and NavInfo, in a deal that will use data collected by Bosch’s radar and video sensors in vehicles to generate and update high precision maps for automated driving. UK city trials 3D mapping to aid services management and autonomous vehicles
The UK’s Oxford City Council has launched a street mapping trial project which it hopes could transform how manages its services across the city and pave the way for the development of autonomous vehicles. Berlin to expand bike lines, approves self-driving car test
Officials and cycling campaigners in Berlin have agreed to budget about $53 million (€50 million) a year to expand bike use with the goal of reducing car traffic in the German capital, according to Associated Press.
