New report: technology is a game changer
September 18, 2013
For decades, planners and engineers have gathered traffic data using expensive, time-consuming surveys and processes. A new AirSage white paper, "The Future of Transportation Studies: A Comparative Review" looks at the emerging trends that are transforming the transportation planning industry and examines traditional traffic data collection methods and new complementary technologies at the forefront of the transportation industry.
ISS creates research lab
September 12, 2013
Image Sensing Systems (ISS) is to focus on exploring the developing promising new and early stage technologies for commercialisation within the intelligent transportation, safety and security sectors. To this end, the company has formed a new research department, ISS Labs, headed by Dr Panos Michalopoulos, ISS’ original founder.
Smart stop bar detection
September 11, 2013
The latest addition to the smartmicro range of radar traffic detectors is the combined stop bar and advance detector, which the company claims offers a range of up to 180 metres and can effectively replace loops at the stop bar and at advanced approaches.
UK reseller for BlipTrack Bluetooth journey time technology
September 9, 2013
Danish wireless technology company Blip Systems has partnered with Smart CCTV to deliver Bluetooth and wi-fi journey time, origin and destination, traffic congestion monitoring and traffic management solutions to UK roads. Blip Systems’ BlipTrack uses small sensors at strategic points in road networks to track Bluetooth and wi-fi enabled devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and hands-free installations in cars to measure traffic flow and calculate travel time. The ability to obtain traffic flow data
Major upgrade for Mississippi bridges
September 3, 2013
Four major bridges over the lower Mississippi are to get intelligent transportation systems (ITS) upgrades, thanks to a US$10 million grant from the US Department of Transportation TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) fund. The project will expand existing ITS systems in each of the three states to complement previous state and private investments.
Radar and laser detectors save wild animals, protect drivers
August 29, 2013
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) in Ontario, Canada, where collisions with wild animals cost the province more than US$95 million annually, has installed wildlife sensor and alert systems to reduce the number of animal-vehicle collisions on its highways. The MTO has installed two types of systems – one uses laser tripwires to detect animals and the other uses radar, an alternative that was found to address some of the challenges posed by laser systems. Neither system has yet been determined to be
Sensys sensors for Melbourne freeway
August 23, 2013
Work is now underway on installing the latest electronic freeway management technology along the West Gate Freeway in Melbourne, with the entire project to be completed by the middle of next year. Sensys wireless vehicle detection sensors are being installed as part of the US$23.7 million project, which is jointly funded by the federal and Victorian governments. The project includes variable message signs and closed circuit television as well as upgrades to the supporting communication networks and cent
Iteris enhances travel time system
August 9, 2013
Iteris has upgraded its Vantage detection solutions with Vantage Velocity 2.0, which includes several enhancements to its Bluetooth-based travel time system. Vantage Velocity, Iteris’ Bluetooth-based travel time system, employs sensors installed at defined segments along the road to capture the identity of passing Bluetooth-enabled devices. Utilising advanced algorithms, the host software analyses the matches between sensors to create accurate real-time speed and travel time data on freeways and arterial ro
Tablet app provides easy set-up for Iteris hybrid detection system
August 6, 2013
Building on its Vantage video detection technology, Iteris has developed what it says is the first iPad-based application for a video/radar-based hybrid detection solution. The Vector Tablet VST is a convenient set-up tool application for Iteris’ popular Vantage Vector hybrid detection system and allows for complete configuration and visual verification of the detection system operation. Using embedded wi-fi in both devices to communicate securely using multiple security levels, the Vector Tablet VST expedi
