Smart motorways enable the hard shoulder to be used at peak times, creating a temporary fourth lane. Chile's Metro de Santiago has called an international tender for the acquisition of lighting systems and their installation in the city's new number 6 line. According to tender documents, rights to participate can be purchased until 29 July. Technical and economic bids are due on 3 October. The results of early proof of concept tests (EPOC) carried out by the Authentication and Accurate Location Experimentation with the Commercial Service (AALECS) show that the EPOC team has successfully tracked the encrypted Galileo E6-B and E6-C signals broadcast by Galileo satellites. According to the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), data from speed cameras currently operating in its children’s safety zones shows that speeding is decreasing in those areas. The number of speeding events recorded by each camera has reduced by an average of 43 per cent from the first week of its operation to last week, and as much as 99 per cent in some locations. The US Congress gave final approval last night to a US$10.8 billion bill to replenish the federal Highway Trust Fund and through to May 2015. It now goes to President Barack Obama for his signature. Transport for London (TfL) is to trial detection software to enhance bus driver awareness of pedestrians and cyclists. The six-week trial will start later this month as part of a continued drive to improve road safety in the capital.
