Crown International has been awarded a US$547,000 (£375,000) contract by Balfour Beatty to supply and install variable height dual unit enabled PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) masts, as part of the Smart Motorways project on the M5. The masts will be used between Junctions 2 and 4a and will be delivered in 2016. Forty-six PTZ 15 metre masts are to be installed along the M5. European Union rules on safety approvals for new cars will need to be revised to include ‘driving tests’ for automated and fully-autonomous vehicles according to a new report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). ETSC says the EU is far from answering the many research and regulatory questions that must be considered before automated and autonomous vehicles can be put on sale. The report says the priority must be ensuring that the promised safety benefits are delivered in real world driving.

German transportation provider Stadtwerke Augsburg is experimenting with warning lights at two pedestrian crossings in the city in an effort to alert oblivious phone-using pedestrians to approaching trams. Rows of flashing LED lights installed into the kerb are intended to act as an alternative to conventional warning signs; when a tram approaches, they flash red to warn pedestrians that the traffic signal is red and green when it is safe to cross.

UK city Canterbury is to introduce Parkeon mobile and white-label website payment options alongside its ParkREG automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology. It has introduced the Parkeon Whoosh! app alongside ParkREG with barriers technology, rolling out the combination at four car parks in the city. The French Ministry of the Interior plans to extend the country’s nationwide speed enforcement and has ordered an additional 100 enforcement trailers from Vitronic. The autonomous mobile Lidar-based systems utilise Vitronic's Poliscan speed technology and can operate autonomously for a minimum of five days.
