In the meantime, everyone in the host city of Vienna is getting ready to welcome visitors to this, the 19th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress. Throughout the 5-day event, prominent locations in the ‘best city in the world’ (Mercer Quality of Living Survey in 2009, 2010, and 2011) will hold different elements of the congress, and everything is being hosted by the BMVIT (4792 Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology), and organised by 374 Ertico, an umbrella organisation for ITS in Europe. There will also be support from local organisers 4793 AustriaTech. The congress programme includes an exhibition, technical lectures, and a demonstration area.

The theme of this year’s congress is “smarter on the way,” and the organisers hope to “throw a spotlight on the ways in which user-friendly ITS can benefit both private and commercial customers.” Also, there will be a lot of discussion around “connecting modes of transport to make traffic systems flow more easily.”
Vision 2016, recently held in Stuttgart, recorded a 13 per cent increase in visitors, with almost 10,000 visitors from 58 countries during the three days, which its organisers say underscores its position as a leading trade fair for machine vision. This year’s major topics, embedded vision, hyperspectral imaging and 3D machine vision attracted many visitors.
Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) is extending Sydney’s contactless payment system beyond light rail and ferries to include the Australian city’s train network.
The technology allows commuters to pay for ticketing via credit cards, smart watches and other electronic devices, alongside the Opal card.
CTS’s Asia-Pacific team and Transport for New South Wales initially made the contactless system available for the city’s Manly ferry service in 2017.

Plans for each ITS World Congress to smoothly transition into its successor took a step forward at the April 2013 ITS America Annual Meeting in April. Dr Hiroyuki Watanabe, organising committee chairman for the 2013 event in Tokyo met Jim Barbaresso, his counterpart for the 2014 follow-on in Detroit, Michigan to progress high-level cooperation.
