Japanese interactive 3D simulation and modelling software specialist 848 Forum8 is showing its Micro Aerial Pilotless Scanning system (MAPSs) at the show.

It demonstrated the mini-drone on Tuesday night at the Nouveau Stade Bordeaux, adjacent to the Exhibition Hall.
MAPSs, which uses a small, remotely-piloted DJI Phantom 3 quadcopter, maps a predetermined area by flying via GPS waypoints. Forum8 describes it as a low-cost method of producing a range of Geo, GIS and 3D Interactive mapping products and city models.

Flight time is up to 10 minutes, depending on weather and battery capacity.

During that time, the cameras mounted on the drone take between 500-700 photographs, which are then processed by Mitto Design of the US.

The resulting imagery can be processed to create 3D point clouds, real-time interactive 3D virtual reality simulation models or digital terrain maps.

    Developments in software visualisation packages
Adrian Greeman looks at developments in software visualisation packages. The capacity to make visualisations has been growing in importance over the last decade, and is now a well-accepted part of consultations and client presentations. But making high-quality images of projects is still a major undertaking and larger consultancies employ specialist departments to do so. Costs are coming down but it can still take a while, and some high-capacity hardware, to produce realistic renderings from drawings and 3D

LiDAR sets its sights on future problems
AAdvances in LiDAR are helping transport authorities improve services and identify potential problem areas, as geospatial technology expert Dr Neil Slatcher explains. The effects of climate change on the transport infrastructure have long been a cause of concern within the transportation sector - and not only on the structures themselves but also on the surrounding areas. This year, those concerns have become reality with landslides, structural collapses and surfacing issues impacting services across the wo
