Iteris has been awarded a $1.2m, multi-year regional smart mobility contract by the City of Yorba Linda in Orange County, California.

The project — across 87 intersections in four cities — uses Iteris’ ClearGuide solution and is funded by the Orange County Transit Authority’s Regional Traffic Signal Synchronisation Program (RTSSP).

The traffic signal synchronisation project and ITS upgrades come on top of the company's existing wide-reaching traffic management projects in Orange County.

In Yorba Linda - perhaps best-known for being the birthplace of US president Richard Nixon - Iteris' activities will also include the installation of conduit and fibre optic communications systems.

The firm will use its ClearGuide solution to remotely monitor arterial travel times and reliability, identify congestion hotspots and prioritise retiming efforts, as well as creating reports on aspects of mobility, such as Covid-19 impacts and travel time comparisons.

Steven Bradley, regional vice president, mobility professional services at Iteris, says: “This initiative will ultimately help to increase value, effectiveness and resilience in the region’s existing transportation infrastructure, all while improving air quality and sustainability through reduced fuel consumption and emissions.”

According to researchers at the University of Minnesota, most traffic signals in the US are only retimed every two to five years (or longer), largely due to the expense associated with retiming efforts. However, over the past several years, University of Minnesota researchers have developed and refined its SMART Signal system to make it easier and less expensive to retime signals. The system, developed with funding from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), not only collects traffic and si
