TransCore to design and build I-66 active traffic management system
February 15, 2013
One of the most congested interstates in Virginia, US, is to get an Active Traffic Management (ATM) system. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has selected TransCore, a division of Roper Industries, to design and build its I-66 ATM system on northern Virginia’s main highway into the District of Columbia. The US$34 million contract is 90 percent federally funded and will support thirty-four miles of highway from the District of Columbia to Gainesville US-29 in Prince William County. The projec
Jakarta to issue electronic traffic tickets
February 13, 2013
Jakarta city administration and Jakarta Police have teamed up to prepare a more sophisticated system of traffic enforcement using electronic ticketing, in order to reduce fraudulent practices by police officers in the field. “Such a measure will reduce illegal levies collected by traffic policemen in the field from traffic violators,” Deputy Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said. To support the system, the administration will install CCTV cameras across the capital to record traffic violations
ADEC Technologies expands detector range
February 8, 2013
Swiss manufacturer of non-intrusive traffic detectors ADEC Technologies has added to its range of radar traffic detectors with the TDD1-MW75, a Doppler radar traffic detector with a 75 m (250 ft.) detection range. The TDD1-MW75 can be conveniently configured for detection range of 30/45 and 75 metres (100/150/250 ft) using an infra red remote control, available as extra accessory. The detector is specifically designed for green phase request or extension at temporary or permanent traffic lights. “While ther
Access control aids Helsinki’s traffic flow
February 5, 2013
Finland’s capital city, Helsinki, has installed an intelligent vehicle access control system in an effort to increase road safety, reduce hazardous emissions and make the city centre more cyclist and pedestrian friendly. Developed by Dutch vehicle detection supplier Nedap, the system provides selective vehicle access control, enabling the city to regulate traffic move movements and reduce the volume of vehicles in the city centre, by allowing only vehicles with a valid permit to enter. The system offers a
Traffic sensors give cyclists green lights
February 1, 2013
Transport officials in Columbus, Ohio, are following in the footsteps of Austin, Texas; Portland, Oregon and Berkeley, California and recalibrating their traffic signal sensors to accommodate the growing number of cyclists in the city. Nearly all the city’s 1,000 traffic lights are connected to road sensors that detect the presence of vehicles at the intersections and adjust the lights accordingly. Cycles are another story; they don’t contain enough metal to trigger the sensor. This has caused some cyclis
LeddarTech increases d-tec sensor range
January 31, 2013
LeddarTech, Canadian supplier of advanced 3D detection and tracking systems based on patented Leddar (Light Emitting Diode Detection and Ranging) technology, has launched the second generation of its d-tec 3D traffic sensor. Leddar d-tec emits non-visible light into the area of interest and measures the time taken for the light to reflect off of objects and return to the sensor. The second generation provides a range increase of 25 per cent for all d-tec products without comprising the accuracy and performa
BlipTrack monitoring in New Zealand
January 24, 2013
Danish wireless technology company Blip systems has supplied engineering and technology services provider Beca with its BlipTrack Bluetooth traffic monitoring system, which has been deployed in Waikato, New Zealand. The Te Rapa Bypass project is the first of a planned US$2 billion investment by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) in the Waikato region’s transportation network over the next eight years. The BlipTrack solution has been established in advance of these projects and will continue to assess
Iteris launches video detection for span wire intersections
January 23, 2013
Intelligent traffic management information solutions provider Iteris has added a new product to its Vantage video detection product suite. SmartSpan uses proprietary Dynamic Zone Stabilisation (DZS) algorithms to provide accurate and cost effective advance detection and stop-bar detection of vehicles at intersections equipped with span wire mounted signal lights. According to Iteris, the new solution addresses the unmet needs of many traffic management agencies that have not been able to cost-effectively de
IRD to provide commercial vehicle e-screening in New Jersey
January 15, 2013
Traffic management systems company International Road Dynamics (IRD) is to implement and operate a commercial vehicle electronic screening system as part of New Jersey’s Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) program. The CVISN program is a collection of information systems and communication networks owned and operated by government, carriers and stakeholders that support commercial vehicle operations (CVO). As a result of this contract, IRD will provide e-screening services to commerc
Iteris expands video detection product offering
January 15, 2013
Realising that rising fuel costs lead to more commuters taking to the streets on bicycles, creating an increased need for accurate bicycle detection at intersections, US traffic management information solutions provider Iteris has launched SmartCycle, a new product addition to its Vantage video detection product suite. According to Iteris, an intersection configured with SmartCycle can effectively differentiate between bicycles and other vehicles, enabling more efficient signalised intersections and maximis
