The share of private cars in urban mobility remains stubbornly high, despite heavy investment into public transport systems over the past decades. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) can become the game changer by making public transport responsive to the mobility demands of citizens in real time.
This is the message the International Transport Forum (ITF), an intergovernmental organisation for the transport sector with 57 member countries, is taking to the ITS World Congress meeting in Bordeaux, France
The government of Lithuania has used Esri’s software to create a website – which went live this week - covering all of its transport network rather than simply one urban area. “It’s a multimodal journey planner for the whole country,” explains Terry C. Bills, Global Transportation Industry Manager at Esri. “So it’s a question of stitching together city systems with inter-city ones and pulling them together in a seamless way.”
An imaginative and systematic approach to monitoring and evaluation has won Bremen, Germany the European Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) Award, while Östersund in Sweden has been presented with the European Mobility Week Award for its work on sustainable travel options.
