    New York City sees reduction in pedestrian and cyclist fatalities
    New York City has ended the first six months of 2017 with the fewest traffic fatalities ever measured, according to figures released by Mayor Bill de Blasio. Under the Vision Zero program, as of 30 June, the city had recorded 93 fatalities, the first time ever that fewer than 100 lives had been lost in such a period. The full fiscal year ending 30 June recorded 210 fatalities, 31 fewer than the prior fiscal year. The reductions come as the City is increasing traffic enforcement against dangerous violations

    New York Citi Bike pilots laser safety light
    As part of an ongoing commitment to safer cycling in New York, the Citi Bike program is installing a new safety feature, the Blaze Laserlight, on 250 bikes this winter, with the aim of making Citi Bike riders more visible to drivers and pedestrians. The light uses laser technology to project a bike symbol six metres in front of the rider and, unlike the standard beam of bike lights, is visible from various perspectives.     Alta Bicycle Share to run New York City scheme
    Alta Bicycle Share has been chosen to operate a bicycle-sharing scheme in New York City. The company operates similar programmes in Washington, DC, Boston, Massachusetts, and also in Melbourne, Australia. It is expected that the New York scheme, which will roll out next summer, will be the biggest bicycle sharing initiative in the US with the establishment of 600 bike stations and 10,000 bicycles deployed.
