The UK Government has awarded US$137 million (£109.7 million) of funding, alongside significant funding from industry, to help develop the next generation of driverless and low-carbon vehicles, as part of the Industrial Strategy and the government’s Plan for Britain.
Seven innovative projects will share grants from the latest round of funding from the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), the joint industry-government programme to put the UK at the forefront of low carbon vehicle technology.

Uber has won the right to challenge a Transport for London (TfL) rule which would require some of its drivers to pass an English language test.
Announced by TfL last year and due to take effect from 1 October, the rule would mean that drivers who are not from English-speaking countries would have to take an English reading, writing and listening test, which TfL said was ‘in the interests of public safety’. Uber had previously supported the test, but now argues it is too rigorous and costly.
Saudi Arabia has committed around US$97 billion between 2010 and 2040 into railway infrastructure, with approximately US$17 billion to be invested between 2010 and 2025 in an advanced and integrated multimodal transport system. In addition, the Kingdom will invest in multiple metro transport projects to address traffic and public transport challenges, including Jeddah, Riyadh and Mecca which will all break ground between 2013 and 2014.

Four major bridges over the lower Mississippi are to get intelligent transportation systems (ITS) upgrades, thanks to a US$10 million grant from the US Department of Transportation TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) fund. The project will expand existing ITS systems in each of the three states to complement previous state and private investments.
