The call for papers for the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems 2016 has officially opened. The Congress will be staged at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne, Australia from 10 to 14 October 2016. The theme for the 2016 World Congress is “Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”.

Car-sharing group Car2Go is suspending operations in Toronto, Canada, because of what it sees as restrictive regulations introduced by the city’s authorities. Toronto City Council is introducing its own free-floating carshare pilot on June 1 which Car2Go says makes its service ‘inoperable’. In a letter to users, Car2Go’s North America CEO Paul DeLong says that companies taking part in Toronto’s new pilot will be charged $1,499.02 per vehicle and that many streets which operate a residents’ parking permit
ITS Australia has teamed up with Mastercard to present the ITS 2016 Mastercard Smart Cities Hackathon which will be staged at the ITS World Congress Melbourne. With more than $20,000 in prizes, the Smart City Hack, being held on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October, will bring together Australia’s most talented developers, designers and entrepreneurs to create a new wave of smart city services and solutions.
The Living Lab Bus joint project, coordinated VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and launched at the beginning of 2016, is using Finnish electric buses acquired by Helsinki Region Transport as tangible development and testing platforms for businesses to validate their solutions in a real use environment. The buses can be used for testing user-oriented smart services and technologies, ranging from user interfaces and passenger services to sensors and transport operators’ solutions.
