Zenrin’s mapping technologies for automated driving

Using a combination of highly technical, stateof- the-art vehicle mounted equipment, Zenrin creates high-precision 3D map databases, which it is highlighting at this week’s ITS World Congress. Using a combination of highly technical, stateof- the-art vehicle mounted equipment, 8516 Zenrin creates high-precision 3D map databases, which it is highlighting at this week’s ITS World Congress.

Earlier in the year, Zenrin joined a group of Japanese companies, mainly car producers, to form the Dynamic Map Planning Co (DMP) which is designed to examine the methodologies of developing maps for AS/ ADAS applications for expressways and general roads in Japan.

At the ITS World Congress, Zenrin is also demonstrating its relationship with IBM’s Watson IoT platform and how the use of the cloud is enabling traffic authorities to communicate with drivers in real time to avoid traffic problems and possible accidents, as well as reporting on incidents such as debris left on the road.

A Mobinet pilot is combining onboard weighing with V2X comms to streamline vehicle weight enforcement. David Crawford reports. Pan-European, cross-border weigh-in-motion (WIM) for trucks is now a practical possibility, following successful Scandinavian trials within the EU-co-funded Mobinet (Internet of Mobility) programme. New technology is using strain sensors, located on load-bearing components and routinely installed in truck fleet management systems.

Drive C2X has shown that advanced warning of poor road conditions could cut fatalities, as David Crawford explains. Connected vehicle (CV)-based warning technologies could mean 6% fewer deaths and 5% fewer injuries in road traffic accidents in Europe, according to the final results of the European Commission (EC) co-funded DRIVE C2X project. According to the European Centre for Information and Communication Technologies (EICT) which provided management support, these “prove that CV systems work and can hav

Here Technologies has piloted a system with Mitsubishi Electric which it claims can enable vehicles to automatically warn others about upcoming road hazards with lane-level precision Here says the Lane Hazard Warning platform enables an event detected by a vehicle’s sensors – such as a slow car or pothole – to be localised to a specific lane. This information can then be transmitted in real time via the cloud to other vehicles approaching the same area, the company adds. Hiroshi Onishi, executive office

David Crawford investigates the potential of new projection technology. Fifty years on from its invention of the microchip, US company Texas Instruments (TI) has compressed the technology into a surface area of just 4.3mm. As such, it forms the heart of a new Pico Digital Light Processing (DLP) system that is set to transform travel information delivery for millions of users on the move - by making it projectable.
