8438 Western Systems is debuting P-Plus, a new all-in-one signal cabinet with integrated battery backup system (BBS), at ITS America this year. As the transportation industry moves toward requiring battery backup for signals at railroad crossings and intersections where safety is a priority, P-Plus is a cost-effective alternative to the traditional signal cabinet.

Western Systems has revolutionized cabinet design by providing built-in battery backup within a standard NEMA cabinet, without increasing the footprint. Saving money and space, P-Plus eliminates the need to construct a separate battery cabinet or custom BBS piggy back – a significant advantage, especially at intersections with limited space or for agencies with limited budgets.

The patented P-Plus design is BBS-agnostic, and batteries are housed in an isolated compartment with side door access. P-Plus also includes a generator bypass on the cabinet front door. P-Plus is available in M36, P, Stretched-P and R cabinet sizes, and provides a 16-position drop down load bay to simplify cabinet maintenance.
