560 ITS America has set up an information exchange to make sense of the myriad Internet of Things (IoT) data in the transportation ecosystem.

The ITSA Data Exchange, powered by data firm Terbine, is exclusively available to all ITS America members and will enable them to share in one place large volumes of information from multiple sources and platforms.

“This is a tremendous new tool that will help our members save lives and improve mobility,” said ITS America president and CEO Shailen Bhatt at ITS America’s annual meeting in Detroit. “Everyone talks about ‘big data,’ but we need ‘big information’ to make a difference, and that’s what the Exchange will provide.”

The hope is that businesses, governments and researchers will be able to access information which can be used to create safer and more efficient mobility solutions.

Based on Terbine’s cloud-based IoT data system, the Exchange supports multiple IoT data types generated by public agencies, corporations and academic institutions.

ITS America members can participate in the scheme on a pilot basis for six months during which time there will be testing in areas such as traffic management, alignment of power industry resources with deployment of electrified vehicles, and how to measure mobility and connectivity.

Members will be offered training to manage their machine-generated data flows after the pilot period.

Mobility pricing offers new tools for managing mobility
Mobility pricing is the best way of sustaining and enhancing mobility, argues Moving Forward Consulting’s Josef Czako. Mobility pricing (MP) is effectively the culmination of the ‘user pays’ principle and has been referred to in many policy discussions about electronic toll collection, road user charging (RUC), and pricing. MP not only reflects the ‘use more, pay more’ nature of RUC, it also takes account of the external cost of journeys including pollution, noise, the cost of congestion and accidents.
