560 ITS America has set up an information exchange to make sense of the myriad Internet of Things (IoT) data in the transportation ecosystem.

The ITSA Data Exchange, powered by data firm Terbine, is exclusively available to all ITS America members and will enable them to share in one place large volumes of information from multiple sources and platforms.

“This is a tremendous new tool that will help our members save lives and improve mobility,” said ITS America president and CEO Shailen Bhatt at ITS America’s annual meeting in Detroit. “Everyone talks about ‘big data,’ but we need ‘big information’ to make a difference, and that’s what the Exchange will provide.”

The hope is that businesses, governments and researchers will be able to access information which can be used to create safer and more efficient mobility solutions.

Based on Terbine’s cloud-based IoT data system, the Exchange supports multiple IoT data types generated by public agencies, corporations and academic institutions.

ITS America members can participate in the scheme on a pilot basis for six months during which time there will be testing in areas such as traffic management, alignment of power industry resources with deployment of electrified vehicles, and how to measure mobility and connectivity.

Members will be offered training to manage their machine-generated data flows after the pilot period.

Mobinet counters weighty cross border concerns
A Mobinet pilot is combining onboard weighing with V2X comms to streamline vehicle weight enforcement. David Crawford reports. Pan-European, cross-border weigh-in-motion (WIM) for trucks is now a practical possibility, following successful Scandinavian trials within the EU-co-funded Mobinet (Internet of Mobility) programme. New technology is using strain sensors, located on load-bearing components and routinely installed in truck fleet management systems.

On-road and in-vehicle are not in competition
The integrity and accuracy of data that can be verified by weigh-in-motion technology has been improving for decades – and the range of WIM applications is increasing at a tremendous pace. Chris Koniditsiotis, president of the International Society for Weigh-in-Motion (ISWIM) and CEO of Transport Certification Australia (TCA), began his career in 1985 as a pavements engineer. “When I joined this portfolio, the integrity, accuracy, and sampling frequency of mass information delivered at best an estimate, us

Incoming chair of ITS America looks at the road ahead for ITS
Jill Ingrassia, incoming chair of ITS America, on the exciting and challenging road ahead. Question: You have been a member of the Board of ITS America since 2008. What, for you, have been the top few standout achievements in that time? Answer: Hosting the 2014 ITS World Congress in Detroit is a clear standout.
