148 Wavetronix, a worldwide market leader in radar traffic detection and monitoring, comes to Intertraffic with the story of non-intrusive radar traffic detection as a simple and long-lasting alternative for loops. The setting for this particular story is France, and the Direction Interdépartementale des Routes (DIR) agency which began moving away from intrusive detection technologies four years ago.

Like many transport agencies, DIR has found SmartSensor HD to be a wonderful replacement for traffic loops. DIR is in the process of replacing outdated metering stations with the non-intrusive, true high-definition radar provided by SmartSensor HD.

“After extensive testing, DIR recognised that SmartSensor HD’s data is accurate and very reliable,” says Bruno Claverie, Wavetronix regional sales manager in France. “HD works in a variety of weather conditions, is safe to install and has been proven at major installations around the world.”

DIR EST was the first region in France to take advantage of HD, deploying 12 HD detection stations along portions of the A36 near Mulhouse. Now DIR Massif Central has followed suit with deployments on the A75 in the Puy-de-Dôme Département and the N88 in the Haute Loire Département.

“The maintainability of SmartSensor HD is unrivalled,” says Behoit Baufreton, north district maintenance manager for DIR Massif Central. “Its ease of installation and configuration are qualities that are very much appreciated by our departments.”

Wavetronix says that SmartSensor HD is the only radar-based traffic detection device that offers true high-definition radar for accuracy that meets or exceeds the standard set by loops.

Inherent weaknesses in satellite communications are leading several countries to re-evaluate terrestrial-based backup systems. While there was no threat to flight safety as the interference to GPS reference stations being tested, the story highlights how apparently benign threats have the potential t

Expansion of ITS systems has accelerated in Qatar this year, with rapid deployment of a traffic control system in Doha. Less than 10 years from now an extensive system of ITS technology will be operating in Qatar, informing and directing users of the country’s roads. That can be stated with confidence for a number of reasons: the world’s richest country per capita will host the World Cup in 2022 and is understood to be planning to develop sophisticated systems of ITS for road safety and traffic managemen

To complement its existing WIM offering, IRD has introduced a system to detect under-inflated and flat tyres at highway speeds. Tyre inflation pressure has both safety and economic impacts for road users and none more so than with commercial vehicles. An underinflated tyre has decreased directional control, increased risk of catastrophic failure, and negatively impacts tyre life and fuel economy.
