148 Wavetronix, a worldwide market leader in radar traffic detection and monitoring, comes to Intertraffic with the story of non-intrusive radar traffic detection as a simple and long-lasting alternative for loops. The setting for this particular story is France, and the Direction Interdépartementale des Routes (DIR) agency which began moving away from intrusive detection technologies four years ago.

Like many transport agencies, DIR has found SmartSensor HD to be a wonderful replacement for traffic loops. DIR is in the process of replacing outdated metering stations with the non-intrusive, true high-definition radar provided by SmartSensor HD.

“After extensive testing, DIR recognised that SmartSensor HD’s data is accurate and very reliable,” says Bruno Claverie, Wavetronix regional sales manager in France. “HD works in a variety of weather conditions, is safe to install and has been proven at major installations around the world.”

DIR EST was the first region in France to take advantage of HD, deploying 12 HD detection stations along portions of the A36 near Mulhouse. Now DIR Massif Central has followed suit with deployments on the A75 in the Puy-de-Dôme Département and the N88 in the Haute Loire Département.

“The maintainability of SmartSensor HD is unrivalled,” says Behoit Baufreton, north district maintenance manager for DIR Massif Central. “Its ease of installation and configuration are qualities that are very much appreciated by our departments.”

Wavetronix says that SmartSensor HD is the only radar-based traffic detection device that offers true high-definition radar for accuracy that meets or exceeds the standard set by loops.

New opportunities in a data-rich future
Jason Barnes looks at where the detection and monitoring sector is heading. In the future, there will be no such thing as an un-instrumented road. Just a short time ago, that could have been a quote from a high-level policy document but with the first arrivals of vehicles with 802.11p connectivity – the door-opener to Vehicle-to-X (V2X) applications – it’s a statement which has increasing validity. The technology which uses our roads will also provide information on road conditions but V2X isn’t the only

    Radar reinforces detection efficiency
Radar can have distinct advantages in some transport-related situations as Colin Sowman found out during a visit to Navtech Radar. Despite tremendous advances in machine vision techniques, the accuracy and reliability of camera-based detection systems suffer during periods of poor visibility where other technologies may offer an alternative. Radar is one such technology. It too has seen significant development in recent years and according to Navtech Radar, the technology can often fulfil detection and moni

    Solar-powered traffic detection improves communication
Pete Goldin reports on a new wireless, solar-powered traffic detection system being used by Caltrans District 12. As more and more traffic data is necessary to satisfy the needs of traffic management centres and traveller information systems, and as traffic detection technology becomes more ubiquitous, transportation authorities are pressured to find more economical ways of expanding their detection systems. Caltrans District 12 is leading this push by deploying the latest detection system from Case Global
