848 Forum8 has launched its D-Box driving simulator motion software interface at ITS World Congress this week, in partnership with BMIA of Bordeaux, France. This new software plug-in is said to enhance the range of driving simulation hardware systems that can interface with the company's 3D VR driving simulation and modelling software, VR-Design Studio. D-Box allows the driver to experience true-to-life driving motion and vibrations. This capability is enabled by actuators that reproduce vehicle movement and driving sensations – including acceleration, deceleration, pitch and roll – in real time, in a virtual environment.

When equipped with its full motion system, Japan Radio’s driving simulator is so large it wouldn’t fit on the company’s stand – however, ITSWC visitors can still try a static version of the system. The simulator can be used in scenarios where on-road trials could lead to dangerous situations and it repeat tests to evaluate the reaction of a number of drivers to a particular set of circumstances. Using the simulator is said to be both faster and cheaper than putting vehicles on the road and situations modell

UK-based research establishment TRL has launched a blind spot simulator rig which uses virtual reality to improve truck cab design, road layouts and improve the safety of road users and reduce costs for designers. The precision of the system is based on a physical rig developed by TRL and Volvo. It ensures an accurate representation of direct vision from a real-life Volvo vehicle cab which allows seat, steering and wheel adjustments to be replicated for each driver.

Guillaume Ponsar, tunnel safety engineer with Egis Road Operation, writes about the advantages to be gained from the use of tunnel simulators. Major tunnel disasters over the last decade and more have shown how swiftly and badly a simple crash or fire may evolve should the wrong actions be taken by control room operators or traffic managers. Global safety issues and the reactions of operations staff have now become the principal concerns for Operations and Maintenance (O&M) service providers. As a result, n
