The theme of the ITS World Congress Melbourne is ‘ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities’ and delegates will have a unique opportunity of seeing that in action. A selection of Melbourne’s most innovative transport organisations will guide attendees through Technical Tours in Melbourne as well as Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland New Zealand. Participants will be given a unique insight into the intricate details of systems that support the world’s most liveable city.

Delegates to the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems will have the opportunity to take Technical Tours to experience roads and tunnels with visits to:

•    CityLink - Go behind-the-scenes at one of the world’s first fully electronic toll roads (conducted by 600 Transurban)

•    EastLink is Melbourne’s Newest and Safest Fully Electronic Tollway: Operations, Traffic Control and Maintenance Facilities (conducted by ConnectEast)

•    Managed Motorway Operation: Largest managed motorway network in Australia (conducted by 4728 VicRoads)

•    SmartWork Zones and the Construction of Managed Motorways (conducted by VicRoads)

•    SmartRoads to Achieve Improved Network Performance (conducted by VicRoads)

•    VicRoads Traffic Management Centre (conducted by VicRoads)

Meanwhile, there are public transport tours of Victoria’s Public Transport Control Centres, 7525 Yarra Trams and Metro Trains (conducted by Public Transport Victoria)

Melbourne is the largest container port in the southern hemisphere so the technical tour programme will have a programme of air and sea ports, including:

•    Port of Melbourne: Largest Container Port in Southern Hemisphere and Driver of Urban Economic Growth – Operations Facilities (conducted by the Port of Melbourne Corporation)

•    Melbourne Port System Tour: Enhancing future freight productivity with ContainerChain (conducted by the Port of Melbourne Corporation)

•    Port of Melbourne: Operations Control Centre and Hydrographic Survey Boat (conducted by the Port of Melbourne Corporation)

•    Melbourne Airport: Managing Traffic providing attendees with an overview of recent infrastructure developments and using ITS solutions to improve the traffic flow (conducted by Melbourne Airport)

Delegates will also have an opportunity of getting unique insights into research through tours of the Aerospace, Automotive and Manufacturing Laboratory Showcase at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), (run by the RMIT University, Bundoora Campus) and also the Factory of the Future, Smart Structures and Research-Led Innovation at Swinburne University of Technology (run by Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn Campus).

New Zealand also features in the Technical Tour programme with visits to Auckland’s Transport Management Systems, Devonport Ferry, Public Transport Control and Integrated Ticketing System (conducted by ITS New Zealand in conjunction with New Zealand Transport Agency and Auckland Transport)
