148 Wavetronix, the global specialist in radar traffic detection and monitoring, is here at the ITS World Congress celebrating another year of major growth and an expanded presence throughout the Eastern Hemisphere. And the company is encouraging transportation agencies around the world to “rise above the road” by considering its true high definition radar as a viable, non-intrusive alternative to loops.

This year, Wavetronix supplied thousands of SmartSensor HD units for projects in Denmark, France, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. “Transportation agencies around the world recognise the limitations of loop detection,” says Russ Connely, Wavetronix general manager in Europe.  “With traveller information systems like trip times becoming more prevalent, accurate vehicle detection is becoming even more important. HD is proven to provide accuracy that meets or exceeds loops, and its easy installation and low maintenance requirements make it an attractive alternative without the down time of loops.”

Approximately 2,000 SmartSensor Matrix units have been shipped to Russia for installation at intersections in and around Moscow. Matrix uses 16 true high definition radar beams to create a 90 degree, 43-metre field of view that accurately detects vehicles at intersection stop bars.

Backing up its statement that many agencies are accepting Wavetronix’ invitation to consider its radar sensors for loop replacement, the company points out that in the UK, SmartSensor HD has been granted type approval by the 503 Highways Agency to be used in its MIDAS system for vehicle detection in place of loops. “As more agencies ‘rise above the road’ with Wavetronix, we will become an even more integral part of European ITS programmes,” Connely says.

  • TagMaster CityRadar cuts through clutter
    March 21, 2018
Swedish company TagMaster has unveiled a new radar designed and optimised for smart city applications in traffic counting. Traditionally, it has been difficult for this type of radar to accurately track the number of pedestrians and cyclists because of the interference generated by passing vehicles. TagMaster’s CityRadar cuts through this interference, allowing the radar to count all three classes of traffic simultaneously in adjacent lanes – particularly useful in a city such as Amsterdam, with its huge
