Volkswagen and Uber have said they are to launch thousands of autonomous vehicles (AVs) onto US streets over the next 10 years, starting in Los Angeles.

The fully-autonomous ID. Buzz AD minibuses come via Volkswagen Group of America's autonomous mobility subsidiary Volkswagen ADMT, with testing set to begin later this year and launch expected in LA in 2026.

There will be humans inside them in the early stages "to help refine the technology and ensure safety", the companies say.

VW's AV brand Moia will provide its integrated solution for autonomous driving which includes the ID. Buzz AD and software-based system for the deployment on the Uber platform.

Christian Senger, CEO of Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, says the OEM can "combine the best of both worlds—high-volume manufacturing expertise with cutting-edge technology and a deep understanding of urban mobility needs".

Kjell Gruner, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, adds: “Through our work with Uber, we’ll introduce the ID. Buzz, the reimagined version of the iconic Microbus in all-electric form, to a growing number of riders in the years to come.”

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, called the collaboration "a significant milestone in the advancement of autonomous mobility".
