The US National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE) will celebrate transportation management and operations which save lives, time and money in Washington, DC, next January.

The first Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) awards ceremony is expected to attract 13,000 transportation professionals.

Patrick Son, managing director of NOCoE, says the event will recognise smarter management and operational strategies to increase the capacity of existing streets.

The %$Linker: 2 External <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><dictionary /> 0 0 0 link-external event Transportationops website link false https://transportationops.org/tsmoaward false false%> will take place during the 856 Transportation Research Board (TRB) 98th annual meeting at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center from 13-17 January, 2019.

The awards are open to public and private sector organisations at city, county or state level. Entries should highlight TSMO projects undertaken in the last five years which have benefited the travelling public.

There are four awards categories. One of these will honour major incident or special event planning for situations which affect large numbers of the travelling public - such as car pile-ups which require diversions, or major festivals necessitating a change to traffic patterns.

The other three trophies will be awarded for improving TSMO capabilities, best TSMO project (creative solution) and public communications.

Each winner will receive round-trip travel to attend the 2019 TRB annual meeting. The successful candidates will also be invited to present their projects to attendees and participate in a TSMO panel.

An overall winner will be chosen and presented with the NOCoE TSMO Award trophy. The judges will also select one individual to receive the annual TSMO Champion Award for changing the way people and organisations think about transportation.

The deadline for submissions is 19 October.
