TSS-2195 Transport Simulation Systems is showcasing its 7320 Aimsun Online real-time decision support system for traffic management. One of the most high-profile traffic management projects to use Aimsun Online as its prediction engine is the award-winning Interstate 15 Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) project led by the 1789 San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). At the core of the project is the configuration and implementation of a Decision Support System (DSS) using Aimsun Online.
“The DSS gives system managers comprehensive awareness of the current and predicted performance of the entire corridor,” says Matthew Juckes, senior project manager at TSS. “Now managers can take proactive steps to prevent system breakdown using enhanced controls across devices such as traffic signals, ramp meters, and dynamic message signs.”
Taking it one step further, earlier this year SANDAG completed a ‘Coordinated Test Plan’ for the first ever ‘fully automated’ multi-modal corridor handling of a freeway incident. TSS says this is one of the first times in the US that a traffic management decision has been successfully made entirely based on automatically triggered real-time simulations of the entire multi-modal transportation network.
Another recent innovation to come from the ICM project is the free 511 San Diego mobile application which is available for iOs and 1812 Android. Funded by the 324 US Department of Transportation, the app provides real-time predictions from Aimsun Online and system based advisories, letting users view predictive travel times on I-15; current traffic conditions; MTS bus routes, fares, arrival times; as well as real-time dynamic toll rates for the I-15 Express Lanes. Since its launch in May 2014 it has already had over 25,000 downloads.
Cooperative systems in which vehicles communicate with each other (vehicle-to-vehicle or V2V) and to the road infrastructure (V2I) and collectively referred to as V2X, will build the backbone for safe driving as well as efficient and environmentally-friendly road usage in the future. So Kapsch is very much looking to the future with its V2X demonstration at the ITS World Congress by showcasing how such cooperative communication can avoid accidents, optimise fuel consumption, driving speed and travel time. All of Sensys’ wireless sensors are now being shipped with capability for use with Cloud Connect – the company’s new data hosting service. Traffic engineers can monitor an entire region’s intersections without necessity for servers or software. The technology is claimed to have completely eliminated uncertainty or guesswork over whether signal control detection equipment is working properly. Cloud Connect provides data in real-time, so there is no reason to have broken inductive loops at intersections.
A ‘game changer’ has been unveiled on the Siemens stand in the form of the Sitraffic sX, a new generation traffic lights and detectors controller, which can be updated remotely from internet enabled devices without interrupting normal operation. This enables the system to be remotely controlled and managed in real-time using devices such as a tablet while still ensuring intersection safety and reducing downtime.
Fresh from success in helping the Russian city of Sochi prepare for the Winter Olympics, Czech traffic technology company Cross is showing two new products at Intertraffic.
Its RS 4S traffic controller is a more compact, cost-efficient version of its existing model. Head of sales Tomáš Pospíšek described it as a ‘4.5 generation’ model, which could handle all but the most complex intersections. “It’s a little more simplified than the existing model, but more than enough for most intersections you would find
