ST Engineering has added 5445 BYD as its 6635 first partner in a consortium which seeks to deploy driverless buses in Singapore.
The company is equipping 5445 BYD’s electric buses with autonomous vehicle technology. The vehicles will operate in the towns of Punggol, Tengah and the Juroung Innovation District located in Singapore’s western corridor.
The consortium is being formed following a request from Singapore’s 918 Land Transport Authority and the Singapore Economic Development Board to trial autonomous buses and shuttles.
Dr Lee Shiang Long, president of land systems at ST, says: “We continue to explore partnerships with like-minded companies and incorporate their capabilities into a proposal that offers a sustainable and scalable transportation solution for Singapore.”
Autonomous technology is already being phased into Singapore. Earlier this month, 609 Volvo announced %$Linker: 2External<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><dictionary />000link-external plansfalsehttp://www.itsinternational.com/sections/general/news/volvo-tests-autonomous-electric-bus-on-roads-at-singapore-campus/falsefalse%> to trial a 12m long autonomous electric bus on roads at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) ahead of an anticipated release onto public roads.
Ride-hailing company Waymo may be about to start operating fully-autonomous vehicles (AVs) to pick people up - without a safety driver.
An email sent to users, which appeared on Reddit, said people in Phoenix, Arizona, who were matched with an AV will see a notification in the app that confirms the car will not have a trained driver.
Users can tap a ‘What to Expect’ button within the app to learn more about the AVs. They can also communicate with a rider support agent at any part of the trip via the app o
The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has found that an Uber autonomous vehicle which killed Elaine Herzberg last year had software flaws.
NTSB released a report which says the Volvo XC60’s autonomous system software classified the pedestrian as an unknown object and determined that an emergency braking manoeuvre was needed to mitigate the collision.
Uber confirmed that emergency braking manoeuvres must be carried out manually and the system is not designed to alert the driver.

Scania has joined forces with public transport operator Nobina to trial autonomous buses on public roads in Stockholm.
Two Scania Citywide LF electric buses will operate in the Barkaby area of the Swedish capital, around 20km from the centre. Both buses will operate along a dedicated 5km route with four stops.

Initially, they will be run in autonomous mode without passengers for a distance of 1km, while second stage tests are expected to carry up to 300 commuters per day. A safety driver will remai
