A variable message sign (VMS) replacement initiative involving Daktronics has been recognised with the ITS Tennessee Project of Significance award.

Carried out in collaboration with Stansell Electric, WSP and Gresham Smith, Daktronics replaced 62 VMS across Middle and East Tennessee.

This involved close cooperation with Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDoT) and Tennessee Highway Patrol on coordination, testing, troubleshooting and traffic control plans.

“Daktronics was able to deliver and support Stansell Electric throughout the projects, including the expedited installation schedule,” said Michael Standley, Daktronics project manager. “Stansell Electric needed to get these projects completed quickly. Our Daktronics team was able to work closely with them to deliver on deadline.”

The upgraded Daktronics displays are full-colour, high-resolution VMS with increased messaging capabilities such as graphics and image-posting, giving clearer, real-time information for drivers as conditions change.

"Reliable digital displays are key for transportation agencies that must convey critical safety and travel information,” said Jason Morrison, Daktronics ITS, parking & public transport market manager.

Spencer Degen, Daktronics vice president of transportation, thanked TDoT for recognising Daktronics and its partners.

“Daktronics is committed to designing and engineering high-quality products that stand the test of time," he said. "It is exciting to see this upgraded infrastructure positively impacting traveller safety in Tennessee and across the US.”
