The winners of the prestigious SESAMES Awards will be announced at the CARTES Secure Connexions Event in November, revealing the 11 most innovative companies from the industry. The scheme has been rewarding the best technological innovations in smart cards, digital security, identification, secure transactions and contactless since 1995.

Entries for the SESAMES rocketed this year with 319 submissions. The 42 jury members, all international experts in their field, chose the 34 finalists and will go on to choose the best projects in 10 categories plus the special DISCOVERY SESAMES Award, inaugurated last year, which rewards the best innovation presented by a start-up company. The prize winners will be announced during the SESAMES Awards Ceremony, on November 18 in Paris. Previous SESAMES Awards winners will also be showcased at the ceremony to highlight the positive effect of winning such a widely recognized Award. Many of these have gone on to have a big impact in the industry. For example, INSIDE Secure won a SESAME for its Open NFC software back in 2010. It is the first major player to make available its open source Open NFC software stack available to the general public.

“This decision has undoubtedly been a catalyst by enabling the industry to implement NFC features in Android, whatever the NFC material used,” said Remy de Tonnac, the firm’s CEO. "The SESAMES Award we received at the end of 2010 was a recognition of our innovative and visionary approach. We anticipated a need in the market and thus accelerated its deployment.”

Innovations in mobile ID technologies will soon enable secure identification and authentication, as well as instant access to critical information. And it is governments in less mature markets which will probably be the first to adopt these new technologies. This is because mobile phone use is very high in developing nations and government-to-citizen ID programmes have been moving towards electronic IDs.
