1763 Econolite Group mourns the recent passing of Philip Daniel “Dan” Fancher, founder, CEO and president of 6574 Wireless Technology, Inc. (WTI), who passed away on September 2, 2012.

Dan was born in Tampa, Florida, on November 4, 1944. He spent many years in the electronics industry before inventing, developing and receiving a patent for the wireless technology-based products for his new company, WTI, which was founded in 1984. Dan was also on the front lines of making short-range wireless video transmission available commercially despite the resistance by network television. Through his tireless efforts working with the United States 2115 Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Dan essentially convinced the FCC to issue certification for the technology, enabling the commercial wireless video industry. In 1990 the FCC awarded WTI for its pioneering spirit, the first certification for the over-the-air 900 MHz FM wireless video transmissions under Title 47, Part 15; which permits operation requiring no pathway license. In 1992 WTI introduced the first FCC type accepted “control-link” to provide both remote telemetry and/or wired control of pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, quads, or auxiliary relays. WTI was then awarded the first commercial FCC Part 90/101 pathway license for a 2.4 GHz point-to-point application. This license provides users with exclusive rights and ownership of a specific transmission pathway.

The wireless technology invented at WTI by Dan also played a pivotal role in the development and enhanced capabilities of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) through the use of video detection and closed circuit television (CCTV). It was also through Dan’s unique technical insights that helped set the groundwork for the partnership between Econolite Group, 6626 Image Sensing Systems (ISS) and WTI. The fruits of this partnership include the 6575 Autoscope series of video detection solutions. As a result, his contributions to the transportation industry are immeasurable.
