Over 100 micro-mobility vehicles will be launched by 2018

As the cost of global congestion inches towards the $1 trillion mark, key economies including Europe, North America, Japan and China amongst others prepare for a green-commute blueprint. As the cost of global congestion inches towards the $1 trillion mark, key economies including Europe, North America, Japan and China amongst others prepare for a green-commute blueprint. Some 16 of the key automotive OEMs are working on more than 110 short distance vehicles, with approximately 50 models being already production ready. The remaining 60 are in concept stage, but expected to become production ready by 2020. The emergence of such micro-mobility vehicles is expected to fight congestion, ease parking space identification and aid in faster as well as greener commutes in crowded city centres.

"The micro-mobility segment focuses largely on daily short distance commutes of 1-15 miles, but also includes additional emerging models to provide city-driving of up to even 40-45 miles,” says Vishwas Shankar, Frost & Sullivan industry analyst for automotive & transportation.

Frost & Sullivan will hold a complimentary web conference, entitled The Rise of a Next-Generation Sustainable Mobility, taking place on Tuesday, 17 April 2012, at 3:00 pm GMT. "China is the preferred launch pad by global OEMs. Congested cities with narrow roads and a growing difficulty of parking space identification favours China over other economies, such as Europe. Also, more than 70 per cent of these unconventional mobility models are expected to be electric; China being the biggest e-bike market is expected to lead from the front with this new DNA of integrated mobility,” says Shankar.
