Econolite multi-modal signal system

6692 Econolite Group, partnering with the University of Arizona, has deployed a Multi-Modal Intelligent Traffic Signal System (MMITSS) – a connected vehicle research initiative sponsored by Arizona’s Maricopa County Department of Transportation SmartDrive Program and its partners. The demonstration, supported by connected vehicle wireless system equipment developer, Savari Networks will be featured at the Tech Showcase at the ITS World Congress Detroit. It will present an intelligent traffic priority signal system that will operate in a connected vehicle environment (vehicle to vehicle – V2V; and vehicle to infrastructure – V2I).

The MMITSS will demonstrate the operation of a multi-modal priority signal control system in which several priority requests from varying modes of transportation, for example emergency vehicles, public transit and pedestrians, can be safely accommodated simultaneously. This demonstration will illustrate how existing technologies can provide intersection safety advantages by implementing a connected vehicle-based solution to simultaneously identify, prioritise, and provide safe passage for several authorised priority vehicle requests.

As Econolite points out, today’s advanced transportation management systems (ATMS) provide real-time traffic monitoring and control capabilities.

Recent advances in wireless communications, such as dedicated short range communications (DSRC), are driving connected vehicle technologies. ATMS and DSRC combined can provide ground-breaking MMITSS capability that is more powerful than the individual systems. Together, they can fuel a MMITSS that offers the first real opportunity for significant advancements in traffic signal control, particularly for simultaneous multi-modal priority.

Econolite states that this MMITSS system demonstration presents the ITS community with a market-feasible solution for safely prioritising intersection signal requests for service within an integrated Connected Vehicle and ATMS environment.
