A new report by the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (560 ITS America), in conjunction with 1970 AT&T, investigates how evolving mobile technology and changing demands of the traveling public are shaping the future of transportation in a more connected world.

This report, entitled Rise of the Real-Time Traveler, examines the public’s changing demographics and purchasing behaviors while focusing on shared-use mobility in an increasingly connected world. Utilizing a broad array of research, this report considers the impact of emerging social trends when combined with fast paced technology development including apps and personal communication.

The paper also identifies several themes key to the successful transition into an integrated transportation system including: The need for increased collaboration between public and private sectors; An opportunity for daily commute optimisation; The important role of stakeholders outside the transportation industry; New tools are available that can help determine how individuals choose among transport  modes.

The report also discusses the changing role of the automobile and a potential shift in the way cars will be viewed, built and operated in the future.

“Insight into the trends of how people move from Point A to Point B helps our work at the AT&T Drive Studio, where we are developing new technologies designed to help improve safety, convenience and entertainment in the connected car.,” said Mike Troiano, VP, Product Management, Internet of Things (IoT) Solutions, AT&T. “The opportunities in this space are far-reaching – the more we understand, the better we can build a more mobilised world.”

AT&T and ITS America are taking steps to understand the role mobile technology and innovation will have as transportation options increase. The research examines car sharing, mobility apps and on demand ride sourcing among other considerations, all designed to enable people to travel with increased safety and convenience.
