Luxembourg was one of the first cities in Europe to implement buses with hybrid technology and today 14 Volvo 7900 hybrids operate in the city.

Volvo 7900 electric hybrid buses are with an electric motor, batteries and a small diesel engine and can be powered by electricity for up to 70 per cent of their operating time.

The modular design of ABB bus chargers offers charging power of 150 kW, 300 kW or 450 kW. They are simple to integrate into existing bus lines; an inverted pantograph enables use of a low-cost and low weight interface on roof of the bus.

Buses can play a key role in the battle to improve air quality in towns and cities as David Crawford discovers. A city with a population of half a million would gain about US$12.3 million in annualised societal savings if all its buses ran on electricity instead of diesel. This is the conclusion of a wide-ranging analysis carried out by Swedish bus manufacturer Volvo Group and global business consultants KPMG.

Researchers at the Volvo Group are looking into a future where trucks and buses are continuously supplied with electric power without carrying large batteries. Instead, power lines are built into the surface of the road. This could be a future solution for long-distance trucks and buses running on electricity. “In city traffic, there are currently various solutions and we are researching many others. We have field tests in progress where our plug-in buses are equipped with a battery that can be charged quic

Swiss firm ABB has developed technology that it says can charge a full-sized electric bus during ordinary stops, removing the need for overhead lines in major cities. According to ABB, the bus can be charged with a fifteen-second, 400 kilowatt boost at selected stops, which allows for the vehicle to top off its charge while the passengers are loading or leaving the bus, and a three to four minute charge at the end of the bus line will then fully recharge the batteries.
  • Electric vehicles in construction are the future, say researchers
    December 20, 2016
The industrial and commercial sector is the largest part of the electric vehicle value market and that will continue to be the case according to analysis in the IDTechEx report, Industrial and Commercial Electric Vehicles 2017-2027. Buses are the largest part of that and they are mainly made in China for China, where typical orders are ten times the size of orders elsewhere. Less dramatically, construction, mining and agriculture do not see 70 per cent grants for EV versions yet they are steadily becomin
