London conference hears EC calls for input on MaaS

“Tell us what you need the European Commission to do to help Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and I promise I will do my best to fix it,” was the call from Paivi Wood, policy officer in the EC’s DG Move to delegates to ITS International’s second MaaS Market Conference. “Tell us what you need the 1690 European Commission to do to help Mobility as a Service (8356 MaaS), and I promise I will do my best to fix it,” was the call from Paivi Wood, policy officer in the EC’s 5578 DG Move to delegates to ITS International’s second 8545 MaaS Market Conference.  Several delegates identified a lack of co-operation by bus, train, taxi and other transit companies as the biggest hurdle to implementing MaaS in many parts of Europe and while pledging to act where she could, Wood said such legislation would be at member state level. Chris Perry from 8571 MaaS Global said there had been willing participation from most of the transport operators and local authorities in the Birmingham area, where it is running a MaaS pilot with Transport for West Midlands. However, when questioned about willingness to participate in other locations, he added: “Nobody said ‘no’ but many had lots of reservations, fearing they had something to lose. However, those fearing they have something to lose are being disrupted anyway. And if they don’t join the disruption ecosystem they are probably going to lose - and they can mitigate that risk by participating.”

Newton’s first law of motion states that: Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. While the concept moving bodies has a rather obvious analogy with transport, the law can equally be applied to transportation as a whole – that everything stays the same until an external force acts up on it.
