Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a framework tolling contract by Norwegian toll firm Vegfinans.

The four-year framework deal is estimated to be worth €7.5 million but could grow to the 'low double-digit millions', according to Kapsch.

The contract will see the deployment of the Autopass MLFF (multi-lane free flow) tolling system in the counties of Akershus, Buskerud, Innlandet, Telemark, Vestfold and Østfold, which own Vegfinans.

Kapsch will either upgrade existing tolling infrastructure or build new roadside systems along previously untolled roads.

Dan Isak Kveta, operations manager at Vegfinans, said development will be continuous. The new tolling solutions will span highways and smaller cities, and is expected to enhance transportation efficiency and sustainability across the region.

Carolin Treichl, Kaspch executive vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said the company is committed to climate-conscious technology and efficient transportation solutions.

During the six-bidder tender process, Kapsch focused on environmental responsibility, which includes selecting eco-friendly materials, implementing efficient maintenance practices, optimising delivery methods and ensuring the repair and recycling of hardware.

Kapsch TrafficCom, headquartered in Vienna, has subsidiaries and branches in more than 25 countries and is listed in the Prime Market segment of the Vienna Stock Exchange. In its 2023-24 financial year, about 4,000 employees generated revenues of €539 million.

Vegfinans is one of several regional toll companies created in 2017 when the government decided to merge the country’s toll companies into five regional companies; it is the largest in terms of loan financing for road projects.
