Kapsch completes Gothenburg congestion zone testing

Project for Swedish traffic authority Trafikverket runs for 10 years

Kapsch TrafficCom has completed the roll-out and testing of its congestion charging project in the city of Gothenburg.

Managed on behalf of Swedish traffic authority Trafikverket, the new charging system covers the whole of the city centre, allowing for automatic vehicle identification.

Kapsch TrafficCom is now overseeing all charging and control points in the city. The company says it has replaced the previous system by "working mainly at night and on weekends and bank holidays to ensure undisturbed system functionality". 

Each charging point has its own portal with cameras and other tech equipment which have been replaced as part of the system renewal.

“After months of hard work, we are proud to reach this milestone," says Carolin Treichl, EVP EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom. "Our system now covers 100% of tolled passages in the city, meaning that we are processing over 150 million passages per year.”

The company's contract means it will be in charge of operations and maintenance for 10 years, with two years of optional extension.
