In the meantime, everyone in the host city of Vienna is getting ready to welcome visitors to this, the 19th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress. Throughout the 5-day event, prominent locations in the ‘best city in the world’ (Mercer Quality of Living Survey in 2009, 2010, and 2011) will hold different elements of the congress, and everything is being hosted by the BMVIT (4792 Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology), and organised by 374 Ertico, an umbrella organisation for ITS in Europe. There will also be support from local organisers 4793 AustriaTech. The congress programme includes an exhibition, technical lectures, and a demonstration area.

The theme of this year’s congress is “smarter on the way,” and the organisers hope to “throw a spotlight on the ways in which user-friendly ITS can benefit both private and commercial customers.” Also, there will be a lot of discussion around “connecting modes of transport to make traffic systems flow more easily.”
The United Nations Development Programme in Kuwait (UNDP) has issued a tender for the development of web-based traffic demand management, road safety and enforcement project for the State of Kuwait. Australian company Aldridge Traffic Controllers (ATC) is throwing the spotlight on its new traffic controllers which support the sixth generation of SCATS (Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System). The VC6 version can cover up to 32 signal group configurations and is capable of accommodating 48 loops and eight pedestrian inputs. The system also includes conflict and lamp monitoring with 200m/s fault reporting, hot-swappable vehicle and external modules, Bluetooth data collection and integrated 3G/4G LTE
Uber intends to focus more on its electric scooter and bike business as it says individual modes of transport are better-suited to inner city travel. Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, believes users will make more frequent, shorter journeys in the future, the Financial Times reports. Copenhagen metro operator Metroselkabet has appointed Arup as part of a joint venture with Rambøll to develop the light rail on ring 3 for greater Copenhagen. The new light rail system includes a double track alignment of 27 kilometres and 27 stations with a rolling stock fleet of 27 light rail vehicles.
This major project was planned to promote the use of public transport as well as encourage the urban development along the route and the passage across the city to avoid interchanging in the centre.
