858 ITS Australia has issued a call for entries for its annual National ITS Awards competition in three categories - ITS Excellence Award, Young Professional Encouragement Award, and Max Lay Life Time Achievement Award.

The ITS Excellence Award is given for projects responding to one or more of the themes safety, mobility and/or environment. Within those themes, entries will be judged on how innovative, well developed, sustainable, transferable and interoperable the project is, its environmental effectiveness, and how much impact it will have.

The Young Professional Encouragement Award recognises an under 30 year old ITS professional, or a student completing accredited undergraduate or post graduate work at an Australian university, who has demonstrated a passion for the industry through their studies and early ITS career. Entries are judged on the basis of a 1,500 word essay.

The Max Lay Life Time Achievement Award, named after eminent Australian ITS professional and scholar Dr  Max Lay, honours an individual who has made a significant fundamental contribution to ITS in Australia and abroad, either through a single achievement, or a body of work. These contributions, whether they have been in research, leadership, mentorship, or projects, must have had a lasting impact on the ITS field and must have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to progress the industry.

The 2012 National ITS Awards Judging Panel includes Dr Max Lay, 6373 Ancap chair Lauchlan McIntosh, 1686 Toyota's Neil Daniel, University of South Australia's Rocco Zito, and University of New South Wales' Mike Regan.

"As it is our Australian national competition, award entries must have significant Australian content and an Australian business office. Award winners will receive engraved sculptured trophies and the exciting Young Professional Encouragement Award includes an expenses paid trip to the 2013 6456 ITS World Congress in Tokyo, Japan," said ITS Australia president and chair of the awards judging panel, Brian Negus.

Entries close on 10 September 2012 and entries selected for the National Award short list will be asked for further information due early October. Entry is open to ITS Australia members and non-members are welcome to enter upon joining ITS Australia.

Awards will be presented at a gala dinner to be held at Toyota's Melbourne headquarters on 28 November 2012. This event will provide excellent networking opportunities with government and industry ITS leaders.
