The major theme of Thursday, June 16, at ITS America 2016 San Jose will be a series of tours that exemplify intelligent transportation at work today and with an eye to the future.

The Interstate 80 Integrated Corridor Mobility Project Tour will take in one of the most complex integrated Active Traffic Management systems in the country. This tour includes a stop at the Caltrans TMC in Oakland for an overview of system operations, followed by a drive through a portion of the corridor that experiences more than 300,000 vehicles per day to view devices and learn more about the dynamics of the most congested corridor in the Bay Area where the travel time along this 20-mile stretch can exceed 60 minutes. Travel from San Jose to Oakland will be along Interstate 880.

San José is the perfect location to discuss and debate NextGen technologies that will drive a safer, timelier, more sustainable, better integrated transportation system and the Silicon Valley Intelligent Technology in Transportation Tour will provide unique insights into how this city is forcefully changing the way sustainable business is done with the Green Vision, a 15-year plan to become the world centre of clean technology innovation. San José is leading the world in solar technology, alternative fuels, new transportation systems, efficient lighting and energy monitoring systems.

San Jose is also the largest city in Silicon Valley – a region known for being the hub of technology in the United States. The Interstate 80 Integrated Corridor Mobility Project Tour will explore a number of destinations where technology meets transportation. The first 30 registrants get to see it all on the new Proterra zero-emission, electric bus.

The first stop is the recently activated San Jose Traffic Management Center (TMC), which provides a first-hand look at how the TMC controls traffic and surveillance devices within San Jose while the second stop on the tour will give attendees a chance to see “innovation in action” at the Prospect Silicon Valley Technology Demonstration Center.

In the Smart Collaboration for a Connected Transit System; Integrated Mobility Tour, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) invites you on a ride to the future! Three current innovation projects will be showcased: participants will have the opportunity to board a VTA bus that has been equipped with a Mobileye Collision Avoidance System. This multi-vision-sensor system provides the operator with visual and audible alerts when pedestrians and cyclists are in blind spots or other danger zones with high risk of injury.

The bus is also equipped with a Mobile Passenger Information Monitor System (PIMS), which VTA and Allied Telesis have developed as a platform for displaying helpful customer information, such as nearby transit connections, points of interest, service interruptions and time to destinations.

The third VTA innovation project uses DSRC to communicate between the bus and a Smart Bus Stop. VTA collaborated with Renasas and eTrans to develop a system that allows customers standing at a bus stop to signal their desire to board the next bus serving a specific route. This technology will ensure that customers are not passed up, simply because they are sitting in an area within the shelter that is difficult for the driver to see. It also reduces the delay caused by buses stopping when not necessary. The same technology can be used for other vehicle to infrastructure communications that will improve the travel experience.
