Intelligent Transportation Navigating Traffic

Lear Corporation will demonstrate 3-4 scenarios of vehicles interacting with each other and the infrastructure to provide warnings, situational awareness, and vehicle tracking information. Delegates taking advantage of the unique insights these demonstrations will provide will ride in one vehicle where they will be able to see the information communicated from the other vehicle and the infrastructure. Cellular communication will be used to demonstrate a variety of remote vehicle commands and tracking technologies.

Wave Mobile Solutions Cameras, Data and Safety Using Light Rail

Gridsmart and Wave Mobile Solutions will conduct an integrated demonstration of the Gridsmart bell shaped 360 degree camera along with a Wave Mobile Solutions FiberWire 8011 DSRC RSU. The camera, with a horizon to horizon view which utilizes novel tracking algorithms to track vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, and RSU will be installed at the corner of San Carlos and Market in front of the Marriott hotel. There will also be a 2nd RSU deployed along San Carlos emulating a work zone and providing alerts to DSRC equipped vehicles. The San Jose VTA Lightrail will be used for the demonstration and as the light rail approaches Market Street, upon detection of safety events by the Gridsmart camera, the Wave Mobile Solutions DSRC RSU will send out DSRC basic safety messages alerting the light rail and DSRC equipped vehicles of pedestrians or bicycles in the cross walk, and vehicles in left hand turn lane next to approaching light rail.

Heavy Truck Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control Demonstration Ride – PATH

This demonstration provides an opportunity for visitors to ride in a heavy truck driving on a freeway as part of a convoy of three trucks with the followers’ speed under cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC). This provides closer and more accurate control of the gap and speed differences between the trucks than normal adaptive cruise control, but the coupling is not as tight as it would be in a formally-structured platoon. This demonstration was developed by the University of California PATH Program and Volvo Group under the sponsorship of the FHWA Exploratory Advanced Research Program and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
Participants in this demonstration will experience the use of DSRC vehicle-to-vehicle communication to coordinate the speeds of the trucks so that they can follow each other accurately at constant time gaps. They will also experience the responses of the following trucks when a car cuts in between the trucks, leading to the safe separation of the CACC string and switching to normal adaptive cruise control.

Savari Vehicle Predictive Safety

With the DSRC based connected vehicle market gaining momentum and the upcoming NPRM, there is a growing demand for OE and aftermarket DSRC solutions for both in-vehicle and roadside installations. This Savari demonstration will showcase a suite of V2V safety applications that include Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Change Assist, and Intersection Movement Assist.

San Jose Valley Transit Authority (VTA) Transit Safety

VTA will conduct three demonstrations – a Smart Bus Stop, a Transit Vehicle Collision Avoidance System, and an On-Board Passenger Information Monitor
Smart Bus Stop – VTA, Renesas and eTrans are collaborating to demonstrate a system that will use DSRC technology to notify bus operators of passengers waiting at bus stops. With this system, when a passenger arrives at a bus stop, the passenger identifies what bus they want and when the bus approaches messages are exchanged and the bus knows if it has a valid passenger and must stop.

Collision Avoidance – VTA and Rosco Systems will demonstrate a multi-vision sensor system that provides visual and audible alerts to transit vehicle drivers if a pedestrian or cyclist are in a danger zone when the bus is moving.
On Board Mobile PIM’s (Passenger Information Monitors) – VTA has collaborated with Allied Telesis to develop a proof of concept to provide a messaging solution to transit customers while on board  the bus or light rail vehicle. The advanced passenger information monitor will improve customer service by making graphical geo-coded transit information available to passengers while on board buses and trains.  The system will also be interactive with the customer’s phone to make the experience more interactive and could include transfer and next stop information; tourist points of interest information;Bolo’s / Amber alerts; route info / disruption info; and advertising.

Renasas Riding Along With Advanced ADAS and Data

Renasas will be demonstrating their Advanced ADAS vehicle. Attendees will take a short ride in the vehicle to see a series of V2V and V2I applications including collision warnings, red-light warnings and road constructions warnings. Advanced camera analytics will be used to generate additional information for passenger safety. In addition, attendees will be able to see the advanced ADAS capabilities built into the Renesas vehicle.

President Obama’s proposed 2016 budget could see more progress on many of America’s ingrained transportation problems than has been achieved in some time and includes a six-year $478 billion surface transportation reauthorisation. That is, of course, provided it clears all of the administrative hurdles to become law.
